- New to this... (dated June 20, 2008)
I have never had a blog/live journal before. I'm new to this, so here goes...
Upon reading other people's online journals, I have decided that I wanted to start one. In any case, its a good way for family and friends to keep up with what going on in our little life.
At first thought, there really isn't anything new with us. Just going along in our first year of marriage, experiencing all the things that go with that. Such as, how at 2 in the morning, its not fun to discover the toilet seat left up! Its always interesting learning to live with someone new. I think I have adjusted quicker than Jonathan since I have always had a roommate throughout college. He never did. College was just down the road from him (West Georgia) so he lived with his parents, then moved into his house when he built it. I think he has adjusted well to my messiness (think tornado in the house) and my loudness. In any case being married to the love of my life has been fantastic. Thus far, marriage has been everything and more than I had hoped for.
In the last 11 months, we have traveled to the Biltmore in Asheville, enjoyed a day of hiking at Chimney Rock that is about a 30 min drive from Asheville. We also just got back from a week at Panama City Beach with my family and the Coopers. The weather was wonderful, water was great, and we had a lot of fun. We went to the large maze at Coconut Creek, played put-put and rode go-carts at Emerald Falls, went to Ripley's Believe it or Not, and we down to the newly built Pier Park. Its a new shopping center, equipped with Ron Jon's Surf Shop and lots of other boutiques. We enjoyed a lunch at Margaritaville, and purchased our obligatory T-shirts. It was a great week, and a much needed break from work. But our most exciting travel experience has been Maui for our honeymoon. Aside from the fact that, yes, it was our honeymoon, Hawaii was a gorgeous state and I wouldn't be sad if we had to move there! We were there for 12 days, and were going non-stop. I wanted to experience everything. We drove the famous Road to Hana, took a helicopter tour of the island, got up insanely early for a 22 mile bike ride down the volcano, visited the tropical plantation, and relaxed on the amazing beach! Definitely paradise.
Other than our trips, our first year has been rather uneventful. No babies as of yet, we are definitely going to wait a while, at least thats our plans. I did have a run-in with an American Bulldog that decided that my face would make a nice chew toy (more on that later...). Yeah, 17 stitches. Thats a new record for me! But, stitches are out and I'm using Mederma, which I might add, is great stuff. You can get the kind with or without sunscreen. And now, after 2 months, with a little bit of makeup on it, you can't really see it, thank goodness!
Well, I think my first entry has been fairly successful. This is what we've been up to. Check back later, who knows what shenanigans I may get into... - Oh, Canada! (dated June 25, 2008)
As most people know, I am Canadian... sorta. My parents are both from Canada, but I was born in Georgia. I am actually going to try to get my dual citizenship in the event that Obama does become president...
My grandma has been visiting my parents since the end of May. It is nice that she is able to come. Last year she came down for my wedding, which was special for her, because her 80th birthday was the day before we got married. She can this year to go with us to the beach and stay for a while. The day will come when she will be too old to travel, so my mom is getting her down here as much as she can. It is really scarry to see how much she and mom look alike. I have to think to myself, "Am I going to look like that when I'm 60 and 80?" Not that it would be such a bad thing, but I think everyone has these kinds of thoughts. At least my mom and grandma aren't going bald like my dad and grandpa! But I do think that I look more like my dad than my mom.
My mom and grandma came to visit Jonathan and I this past weekend. They got here Saturday around noon and we went up to Macy's. Macy's has some of the cutest dresses, but I have a problem spending $60 on a dress (it was $95, $60 was the marked down price!) After that we went back home to have a fabulous dinner. Jonathan grilled chicken and I made Gnoochi. What is that, you say? It is an Italian dish. Think potato dumpling. Its base is potato and it is made by mixing flour, egg, and some other stuff. I bought it pre-made :-) I then made a cheese sauce with Fontina and Parmesian cheese, Heavy cream, and Shallots. Sooo good! As Rachel Ray would say, "Its delish!" My mom was very impressed. She always thought my husband would starve because I never showed any interest in cooking. Needless to say, all one needs is a little incentive and motivation. Later that night we played a game of Swedish Rummy. So fun and my g-ma was really getting into it.
Sunday morning we got up and went to church. They had their communion service. I was kind of dreading it to be honest. Those services are always kinda dull. Don't get me wrong, they are a very important time and very meaningful. But, don't you think that they are all the same? This one was different. Our paster brought up this commisioned officer, who is a chaplin for the ARMY. He will be deployed next week, and our pastor wanted to include him in the communion service, not just as another fellow chruch goer. A lot of the stories centered around our soldiers. It was very touching and my mom, g-ma, and I were moved to tears more than once. Long story short, it was the best communion service I have experienced in a long time.
After church we had a light lunch (I had made scrumptious waffles that morning) and they left around 4. I hope that I can get back down to Perry before my g-ma has to leave. She leaves on July 4, so maybe I can go meet her at the airport that morning if anything.
Until next time...
